...In a room just up the stairs...
I don't do elaborate webpages, I barely have a handle on making these things, so excuse the misplaced pictures, typos and scattered text.

I started with a pretty small room, and not much to go on. Once Luke decided on Star Wars over YU-GI-OH! I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to do, but that was it. With the time frame I had (nights and weekends, and the sketch here and there) I didnt have much time for an elaborate plan. That all changed pretty quick.100_0852100_0853100_0859I decided I wanted the Death Star to go on the ceiling, but painting it would be a pain in the butt...so...FoamboardMaking the circleSharp bladeI decided the "easier" way would be to buy some foamboards, tape them and cut one out for a 3D effect. Im not very bright apparently since it took 3 times longer. I dont plan ahead either...things like planning and me dont mix. I gave the "death star project" a rest since it was taking up the floor in the family room and began working on painting the room itself.
One thing I have found out...men CANNOT pick wall color for a room based on the 1" by 1" chip of paint found at the paint store. I suppose I did alright regardless.
100_1093100_1126Tools needed...a ladder, paint brushes, a light, and...BEER.
I painted the ceiling a dark cobalt blue, black was too dark to even try, and it wouldnt look very good. This is a shot of the dish (the vent removed, painted and replaced backwards). I used grey primer and sharpies to detail the vent.100_1292I have no skills when it comes to organizing, so I don't. I cant be creative and organized at the same time, it doesnt make sense. This is why I love drawing...I can be el slobbo, and it's o.k. It can be my natural state for a few hours, no complaints.
100_1153Meanwhile, back on the Death star...100_0875100_0874

After cutting the body, I planned on painting it grey and drawing some lines and being done with it. See? There I go planning again...
I then changed my mind, of course, and decided adding a 3D element would look cool, so, back to Hobby Lobby for more foam board (and the wonderful company of 90 yr old pissed off women) and back to cutting.100_1095
And Painting...and then more cutting as the pieces were then cut again...
100_1097Gorilla glue is awesome. The stuff goes on like Elmers glue and dries like an arc-weld. Little by little the darn thing took shape.100_1100100_1296

I added some R/W/B rope lights (they were outta just white...) around the edge and hung this thing up after 3 weeks of building it here and there.100_1298My favorite SW toy as a kid was a Dewback and a Stormtrooper (can you tell this room is for ME!)
I had to include these guys...
100_1131100_1143100_1144100_1142

Tatooine was a good fit for Luke's room, after all his name is Luke, right?
Besides,we have a new addition to the family...REX, the Bearded dragon. They like arid dry climates..so...double bonus. My first idea was to paint each wall a different planet or landscape from the movies until I realized by the time its done, Luke will be covering it all up with posters of hot chicks, cars and rock groups. (With luck, anyway)
So, sand, moisture vaporators and my favorite...Jawas!
100_1129
100_1128100_1139Glow in the dark spraypaint for the interior of the hut, and the cockpit of the sandcrawler. Also the light switches, a few stars and this and that...100_1146100_1155100_1287Admittedly, fine detailing and close attention to detail is sometimes tough when trying to get latex wall paint to act like oil on canvas. The key is the sharpie, a kids room muralist's main tool. I have used the same technique on almost all murals for the kids with the same decent result. 1) Sketch the pattern in light pencil 2) Paint the base color over the sketch 3) Define edges with with a sharpie and fill in wherever required. In most cases, it works with great results, like the landspeeder and the Jawas...
100_1290100_1289 But...For really fine lines, the texture of the wall can throw off the edges, like on this moisture vaporator- no big deal, it's background anyway. The real trick is getting forground thinGs to look right, like R2D2100_1291Ah, the protagonists. I wanted to spend more time on these two than I can afford, but they came out nice anyway. I cheated a tad by making a rubbing on the wall from a pic I printed out- mainly to get the size right, and some of the detail locations. I added a picture of my dinner while drawing...not shown...a Coke.100_1305100_1306100_1308100_1309100_1310100_1312100_1314100_1316Just waiting on Nice new bedspreads and sheets, but everything else, including Luke, is in the room. It's done. I'll add final pics soon.
